New Hope Baptist Church, the oldest church in New Orleans, is planning to keep its funeral services for members of the Louisiana State Police until 2018.
But the state’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is planning a two-week transition that will allow inmates to attend funeral services.
The transition also allows the church to continue holding its annual St. Louis Christmas Eve service.
The state Department of Correction said the transition is designed to “avoid a situation in which the death of an inmate would be held in abeyance until the inmate’s death can be finalized.”
The department said it will provide information about the transition to inmates during the transition period, including how to arrange a visitation for inmates in the interim.
New Hope Baptist is located in New Ocala, a suburb of Baton Rouge.
